Stallion /Stud: An intact male horse that is breeding or has the ability to breed.

Foal: Baby horse (male or female)

Colt : Male horse under the age of 5 years.

Mare : Female horse over the age of 5 years.

Horse Terms

Hands :

Horse height is measure in "hands" which equals 4 inches . The average Cowboys hand is 4 inches across the palm, so that is how they would measure their mount. The horse is measured from the ground to the point of its withers, the picture to the left illustrates where the horse is measured. For example a horse that is 15 hand is 60 inches or 5 feet at the withers.


Pony: Ponies measure 14.2 hands and shorter (see hands above)
